The Fascinating Kansai Ningyo Joruri
Awaji Puppet Theater

Awaji's distinctive "playing to the gallery" style

Awaji Puppet Theater has played a major role in the history of Japanese performing arts for five hundred years. During its 18th century peak, over forty puppet troupes toured around Japan, conveying the charm of puppet theater. Its specialty is period plays. Onstage quick-changes in costumes and sets, as well as the showing off of gorgeous puppet costumes, represents Awaji's unique, flamboyant "playing to the gallery" staging and performance style. The new theater hall with a nostalgic playhouse atmosphere adds to the charm.
